The painting is "The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus" painted during Dali's religious phase in 1959. Gala, Dali's wife is the Madonna on the banner and Dali painted himself as a monk in the background holding a crucifix. Interesting, but not one of his best paintings.

The painting commands the attention and it is masterful. Then you notice the woman viewing the painting and the scale of it. I agree that including her is very effective overall.
