This happens to be the largest one I picked up.
My trees were about 40 feet high and the hard as rock seeds make quite an impression when they fall. The eight I had have been cut down last September. Two wheelbarrows of seeds would have to be picked up after the drop.

I had a good crop of them this year due to a wetter than normal summer. Too bad the fruit are almost useless. Old timers claimed the apples repelled bugs, roaches etc. that has been largely disproved. The tree makes fantastic long lasting fence post. Fortunately my commercial zero turn makes mincemeat of the apples so I don't have to pick them up if I don't want to. I do save several for target practice! I made a bedside table for some one out of the wood years ago with turned legs. Yea, the wood is very hard, but I had a couple of carbide tipped turning tool that handled it pretty well.

Yes, green brain would be my initial guess. Earl has the right idea here using to craft a bowl! I have really never heard of anything like it before, much less seen one. Too bad you can't eat it (it does look as if it would be edible). Would serve a family of four if it did! All kidding aside though it's an awesomely detailed photograph.

Yikes. I'll never look at osage orange wood the same way. It makes a nice bowl when turned on the lathe (seehttp://www.pbase.com/m4/image/99879249), and with the right finish, the colour lingers (otherwise it turns a mellow brown). I had no idea it was such a nuisance tree; we don't grow them around here.

might be usable for organic lawn bowling...pendant they would be a danger though...fine documentary shot..
