Each year in the fall, usually about the time that we change from daylight saving time to standard time, Tom McEwan, one of the first kayakers to run the Great Falls of the Potomac, sponsors a race down the Great Falls (class 5 - 6). On this occasion the level at the Little Falls gauge was 2.9ft with water temperature about 52 degrees F and the race was run completely down the Virginia side culminating with a 20+ ft drop at Spout.
