I live in southeast Michigan and believe I have found this chrysalis growing on my maple tree, I'm wondering if the name has anything to do with its origin. I have been to Ocho Rios twice and the last trip was this past April. It's brown, approximately 2.5 inches long and is horizontal on the trunk of our Red Maple tree about 4.5 feet from the ground. Whatever it is??? Funny thing is, it's made it's home in the mouth of our tree face. At first I thought some kids had decided to play a nasty joke and put feces in its mouth until a closer look revealed a pod. There's also what looks to be spider webbing or perhaps silk around it. Upon looking at it today I noticed that it's growing yellowish points or spines. Can anyone please tell me what this is? I'm very curious. Im no Entomologist but am hoping to hear from one. thesis at MSU online named a couple that are more likely, ie.cecropia or a sphinx drupiferarum. One last bit of info is last night we seen the biggest moth I had ever seen in my life buzzing around the top of my burning bush. It was as big as a humming bird but it couldn't of come from the cocoon on the tree because it hasn't opened.Thank you for taking the time to read my comment and ANY info is appreciated.
