Avebury is the site of one of the largest Neolithic monuments in Europe. At approximately 5,000 years old, it is older, larger and more accessible than Stonehenge. We loved walking around the grounds and actually being able to get close to these huge stones. Some of the stones were broken up or removed in the past and markers have been added at the locations of missing stones. We also visited the West Kennet Long Barrow, a Neolithic tomb or barrow, situated on a prominent chalk ridge. From the ridge we could clearly see Silbury Hill, the tallest prehistoric human-made mound in Europe and one of the largest in the world.
