This bird has a very unique, easy to identify call. Learn to recognize it, and you will be amazed at the number of Indigo Buntings that may be around you. Even though the bird is brightly colored and rather common, I am always surprised by the number of folks that have never seen one before or aren't aware that they are nesting in their area. Thanks for your comments and taking the time to view my Galleries!

According to my field guides, the Indigo Bunting can surely be found in central Mississippi. Do you think you saw one? They are really beautiful birds.

I first saw this bird in April of this year and again in June on our property in Western NC. We are in the deep woods at about 3100 ft elevation and this little blue guy certainly stands out. Lovely picture. Thank you for sharing!

I have several different types of birds at our feeders every year, but this year we have been visited by at least 8 of these blue buntings. I have NEVER seen them here before, and they are soooo beautiful, and as one person said very hard to photograph because they seem to be very skittish!!! Beautiful photo!!! Also about 8 years ago while walking in the woods my husband and I happen to see a solid red smaller bird with black wing tips. We had never seen another one until the other morning and I happen to see one fly through the yard. I have tried to look them up and cannot find out what they are! They are not cardinals. Does anyone know???

P.S. Fantastic Pics Tracy

I live in West Central Illinois in a very small village in the country. I feed the finches and have for years. Today I looked out 7:30 A.M. and observed a blue bunting at the finch feeder. Just one of them. He stayed for quite awhile. I have the yellow finches, also the red pole finches, which build a nest in my artificial dogwood wreath next to the front door. At present they have 4 babies in the nest, it is fun as I watched them build the nest, then put feathers around the nest, then the next day there were 5 eggs. In less than a week I opened the front door, the mama flew quick from the nest at which time see rolled out accidently one of the eggs. I felt so bad. The egg smashed on the concrete. When I cleaned it up, it had parcially formed into a baby. Within in 4 days the rest of the eggs had hatched out and were so very tiny. One week and they are now doubled in size. The male sits on the side of the nest part of the day while momma sits with her babies, and they sing. The male brings feed, and feeds it to the female. Then the female feeds her babies. Early evening mamma leaves the nest for a while (not to long) and then is back to cover her babies at night. Jean

I saw a small bird of brilliant color, lighter in color than an Indigo bunting, and I thought small in size. It returned this AM and I saw that its wings had darker wings (dark grey). What did I see? I live in the middle western part of Virginia. It matched the looks of a blue bunting in my book, now I wonder if it could be of Indigo bunting, which I see occasionally but not frequently.

Thank you so much. I was really dismayed at some of the photo's of the Indigo Bunting a picture like this could get just about anyone interested in seein one. The one's I saw before this did not do the bird justice at all . I just saw one this radiant last week and I could not get it out of my mind. Somehow seeing it here confirms what I saw and will allow me to keep this visual for some timel. thank you very much once again. Mary
