Can you see the bees busily building little pockets onto the "paper" nest? Late in the fall, this was seemingly in preparation for winter. Hopefully they completed whatever part of the annual cycle that they were involved in before the first heavy rains which washed away most of this facade on the moss covered rock at the Creek Falls.
The camera used for this exposure could not zoom in for an ideal close-up, so this has been cropped so that you can have a view of the nest that is actually somewhat better than I had standing there on the other side of the creek. (I couldn't see the individual bees, except for movement)
Even at that distance the bees were buzz bombing me to drive me away.
Prior to finding this nest, when I was moving in for a close up of the one in the formal garden at Belknap Hot Springs, I got stung on my lip (ouch!). Fortunately, my friend escorted me to the office on the other side of the McKenzie River and got antihistamine for me which stopped the swelling before it extended as far as the tip of my nose (...and stopped the throbbing. How do these people do it that expose themselves to multiple stingings repeatedly?)
I did it for you.
Ha!
(I'm just obsessive about capturing the moment and preserving it for re-viewing ... and re-living ... at another time and by other people. Just like most other obsessive photographers!)
