Lichen on dolerite

Mt Wellington

Dolerite is the same composition as basalt but does not get to the surface as a volcano. As molten rock rises, it pushes between layers of rock, and cools slower, so the rock crystals are larger. The cooling pattern creates a tendency to form columns, which, on the eastern front of the Mountain have created cliffs, some of which have a distinctive shape called the Organ Pipes.
