Baños is near Ambato, Ecuador, within the central chain of mountains, but at a lower level than Quito, so climatically warmer. It shelters in a valley at the foot of a volcano which has been active in the last ten years, so the warnings in guest houses about what to do in the event of an eruption warning, are not all froth and bubble. When I tried to look up Baños on Google Earth, I got the entirely wrong town, down on the lowlands nearer Guayaquil. Baños is one of my favourite places. We took a bike ride for about 30 kms. Mostly downhill, the trick is then to get a ride back up to town without being ripped off. The shop renting the bicycles say that it should be one price; the actual price asked is double that. At dusk, guess who wins? Within the town itself there is bungee-jumping from the bridge, great as a spectator sport. I'm sure it must be a rush to actually do it, but I suspect my knees and ankles, or other tethered parts of me, might complain. Or my bladder. The town is a great place to be during Carnivale. And of course, there are the hot baths, from which the place gets its name.
