The railroad places a broom and shovel at each switch for crews to use to clear the switch points of snow and ice during the winter months so trains could be lined into the proper track. In the lower 48, this task is commonly accomplished using propoane tanks operated remotely by the dispatchers. Because of the Alaska Railroad traverses such remote territory, this is done by hand.
