1st: Tools At Play - by Ord

Although the EXIF data shows no flash, this was taken using an external flash connected to the sync socket on the A1.

great idea.
However, I have to admit that I'm finding it a bit erotic. With the queen being double jointed and all... :)

Very, very cool shot. Nice reflections (the pieces on the board, and the board on the pieces). The rust doesn't bother me at all...adds a bit of 'character'.
If I had to nitpick, I'd want the far side R & B bases to appear a bit more focused, but this could be due to the light as much as anything else...
Wonderful shot.
Bob

Great picture and execution. I especially like the reflexions in the board and the worn bits really plays nicely with the worn edge of the board. A very strong entry.
Cheers Peter

This is a well executed shot! The lighting angle is right on, and I personally like the contrast of the "off colored" bits. Perhaps you could do an entire set useing shiny new against rusted ;-).. Nice image!

I like the idea and the composition too. But, I would set the focus on the first (8mm) bit, and perhapst increase the DOF. MCsaba

Thanks John & Richard. I did take your idea and darken the background and image slightly. I also took out a little bit of saturation so that the rust is a tiny bit less pronounced. I wasn't sure about using the rusty bits either. First I thought to use some other allen key bits that are new and shiny, but they didn't look very intersting. Then I was going to remove the rust, but then noticed that the same color appears in some of the white marble squares, so I decided to save myself some effort and leave them as they were. The brown coloring at the tops of the other tall pieces are a reflection from dark wood just outside of the frame.

Nice one Ord. Fun idea executed very well. The light and smooth textures work well and the composition and crop are good. The rusty bits do seem a bit out of place with all the other pristine tools, but maybe the knights and castles are a bit rougher and less refined than the rest (pawns aside?), but this is still a fine image.

Great idea, nicely composed and well light. I am not sure if I like the rust on the screwdriver tips or not - most of the shot is gray, silver and back, the screwdrivers stand out a little too much for me. I'm not sure this is a good idea either, but I would also be curious to see if darkening the shot some, could add some drama?
Richard.

Thanks for the comments!

Excellent idea and execution, Ord ! The rusty parts give a nice accent and are reflected by the bishop, queen and king, such that all important pieces have that 2 colored look. Congrats !

Great idea (wish I'd thought of it!) Shame your screwdriver bits are rusty.
