RUFF Diamonds by John down under

Adelaide, Australia

My wife brought the moth to me during C16 Optical Illusions, thinking that I might be able to make use of it with its decoy eyes, but I didn't get around to using it during that Challenge. When C17 Abstracts came along I was thinking about how I might integrate Molly into an entry. I started with thinking that a bunch of moths the right way up (whichever way that is) and upside down would fit well together, then got to thinking that the shape of Molly's head is not so different from the moth. ;o)

I like the fact that this works as a thumbnail or at full size. Try squinting/defocusing and/or backing away from your monitor for a different perspective.

The EXIF data is for the moth photo. I took Molly's photo the next day, ie 18 Sep 04 (and it wasn't a macro ;o)).

John,
This is a great image. when you move back it's a brilliant pattern and then you move in closer and the individual elements (particularly Molly) just burst out and really hold your attention.

Great piece of art. Reminds me of some of MC Escher's symmetry drawings (take a comparing look here ).

OK, there's some PP in this one, but there's also a lot of creativity, imagination, humour and skill. I think it's amazing.

Tom, you mean you weren't thinking 4 to start with?!?! LOL Thanks for your interest anyway. Unlike my bee, this can be seen to be a real abstract, even if it is somewhat of a composite. Cheers, John

I am honored. I do like it much better this way, just raised my vote a point.

Some PP for sure. I couldn't figure out how to do this one with mirrors. ;o)
Actually, I started out with The Silence of the Lambs kind of idea, but quickly changed to this one to create a more interesting visual effect. I'd intended the extra pair of moth 'eyes' between the pairs of moths at centre left and centre right in my original post to provide a diversion from the uniformity of the rest to give people more to see. However, I agree with Tom and changed those spots to be consistent with the rest of the image after all. I like it better this way too. Thanks for your suggestion Tom. :o) Cheers, John

I think its well balanced..two eyes look on multiple eyes look back

Very cool and well thought out. Maybe a little much PP. Are the two eyes between the left and right two butterflys supposed to be there? Seems those two spots should match the center treatment (if you were going for symetry). I think you should get that pattern made for a blanket for Molly!
