Hi Brian,

Getting closer all the time. :o) When you have your pic open in your editing program on your computer, one of the last things you do is to resize to 800 x 600 or something similar. You can then save as a JPEG and choose a compression level (or quality) that keeps the file size down to less than 170kB. What program do you use? If it is Minolta's DIVU that came with the camera, it is trial and error to figure out what compression to apply to give you the file size you want.

Could I suggest that once you post your pic on pbase, try the view option, or go back to the gallery thumbnails screen and select yours to see what it looks like when it opens. If it easily fits onto the screen (depending on what resultion you run at), it can't be too far from being the right dimensions. If it is much bigger than the screen, it is clearly too big.

Cheers, John

Hi John,{:-) It just goes to show that I still do not know what I am doing{:-( But I think each time I send in some thing it gets closer to what I need to do. (maybe?) Brian

Hi Brian,

This lonely gravesite in the middle of nowhere certainly fits the theme. Nice use of colours and framing of the cross. With this kind of shot, you could try shifting the horizon up or down a bit so it is 1/3 of the way into the picture, although in this case a higher horizon might have interfered with the horizontal bar of the cross itself. There is no one rule that fits all situations, but the rule of thirds is something to consider.

Now for the technical stuff about your post. Even though the file size was within limits, the pic you posted was huge, nearly 1500 x 1200 pixels. Pics need to be 800 pixels or less on the longer side, which is nearly half the size of what you posted. By compressing that large pic to 150kB, you pretty much destroyed its quality and ended up with really obvious JPEG compression artifacts. I resized your pic down to 750 pixels wide rather than 800 so I could save it at a high JPEG quality and still be within the 150kB file size limit (give or take 10%, so about 170kB max). However, because the original had all those compression artifacts, there is no way to improve the quality and all I could do was try to minimise further degradation. You can still grab your original pic off your computer, resize it to 800 wide, compress it to less than 170kB and replace this one (at the bottom of the edit screen for your current post). It will be the same pic, but look heaps better. :o)

Cheers, John
