hybrid (red-naped x red-breasted) Sapsucker

Randall Park

The opinion of our local woodpecker biologist.

To me it looks like a hybrid (red-naped x red-breasted) due to the amount of black showing through the red on the side of the face and the almost visible white line extending from behind the eye and above the black on the side of the face. Given the fact that I have documented Red-breasted and Red-napeds cross-breeding/nesting together in the Ahtanum makes it more likely that we could get either species or hybrids between the two in Yakima as they move downslope in winter…something Red-breasteds due regularly on the west side of the mountains.
