Urban Jungle – Isolation in the City

Under the canopy the jungle is filled with diversity of life shadowed by tall trees with sunbeams penetrating only between the branches. As in the natural jungle, the tall structures of the urban jungle cast long shadows. Far below cars and people hustle to and fro in their daily activities. To the passerby impressions in the city are full of motions and in its totality it blurs into a colorful tapestry vertically leading the eye to the heavens. But back on the ground on closer look we see a melting pot of diversity, the isolation of people passing each other without even a glance, the togetherness of lovers, the family enjoying a Sunday morning on the steps of a café, the hurried motion of a taxi whipping by. Opportunity mixes with sadness and grief. The color palette present in the city spans from the harsh green to the warm brown tones of the café reflecting the colors and emotions of life captured in this portfolio. As the artist explores the colors and emotions of city life, a fresh and unique view emerges.

This Portfolio was the runner-up (2nd place winner) for the Third Annual Mike Ivanitsky Award for Photographic Excellence at Foothill College, Los Altos, CA, in May 2009
