The polar bears were waiting for the Hudson Bay to freeze over
so they can get out on the ice to hunt for seals. They haven't eaten
in about 6 months and they are hungry. This male was following a mother
with 2 10-month old cubs. He followed them onto the thin ice that was just
forming over the last few days when temperatures had dropped dramatically
but he had to turn back since the ice did not yet support his weight -
the mother and cubs sensed safety on the ice.
