AMI Trail

Between the noisy interstate highway and Pocatello's southern hills, a paved trail has been built on the basalt ribbon that filled a long-ago streambed. Part of the many-faceted Portneuf Greenway, this is the AMI trail, and these photos are mostly from the southern end, called the Kirkham Trailhead.

Joggers, hikers, cyclists, skaters and dogs pass some delightful views, both far and near. Fierce winds here make it dicey to get anything that isn't in motion; basalt and cacti are GOOD bets! The rocks here curve and tumble, sometimes standing tall in blocky columns, and nearby, flowing in undulating waves. Lots of variety in a small area, and it's possible to wander well away from the trail for uninterrupted hours.

However: A freeway connector is being built across this lovely and intimate natural masterpiece. Good that I caught these views before they began deconstructing the lovely landscape that was!
