No! No! It's NOT a fungus; it's part of a tree root (we think)
South of St. Helena, Napa County, California
This fooled us, pushing up as it did after a rain. Now we think it's part of a black walnut root, the tree having long since ceased to exist in this spot. However, we could be mistaken. We didn't poke or pry at it. If we see it again, some future year, we'll know!
