For a mind-altering submersion in the worlds of both indescribably big trees and astoundingly complex littoral pools, visit this rare combination of national and state park management of both forest and tidepool ecosystems that run the length of at least two counties in northern California. We camped at the bottom of a steep ravine, probably a thousand feet below the roadway that was on its other side a thousand feet above the beach. My photos are mostly from the redwood forest side; many are of the fungi that punctuated the trails in this damp, darkened world. We also visited popular ocean-edge trails close to Crescent City, and may have crossed the state line into Brookings, Oregon.
