Earlier peoples used to burn the forests regularly to control the underbrush. Such fires would work through the very protective redwood bark
and smolder for weeks or months within the giant boles, creating caverns big enough to house a family or two (whether this happened or not, I've never read).
Our quick walks don't give us time enough to get the lighting right to catch the size of these open-bottomed trunks.
