Our cameras were busy before we reached our campground, and three days' stay here kept on paying off as we hiked and visited as many of the features available here as we could fit in. We joined two group walks that led us into territories that we wouldn't have seen otherwise, and the 75-mile scenic drive brought us to McDonald Observatory and its 30+ associated telescopes, a stop that became a talking point as we mingled with people at later campgrounds. I didn't get to hide out in the bird blinds at Davis Mountains State Park on that trip, but a couple months later, we arrived there as park hosts, so I did get to check people's notes, and learned it wasn't just we who missed seeing the Montezuma quail for which that park is--or used to be--known.
