Elephant Island

Near the Antarctic Peninsula

Elephant Island is an ice-covered island that is part of the
South Shetland Islands and about 150 miles northwest of the
Antarctic Peninsula.

Historically, Shackleton and crew made their way to Elephant
Island in 1916 after their ship was crushed in the ice. He
took 5 men and made their arduous way to South Georgia
Island where he found help to return to Elephant Island
and rescue his remaining 22 men.
