The historical significance of our trip is that we are at
the 100th anniversary of Ernest Shackleton’s legendary
Endurance expedition to cross Antarctica through the
South Pole. The expedition failed when the Endurance
became stuck in the ice and Shackleton had to ride
the ice floes to find help.

Stromness is the location where Shackleton and several
of his men made their way back to civilization in 1916
resulting in the eventual rescue of his entire crew.
