The brown balls of fluffy fur among the adult penguins are
juvenile penguins called oakum boys.
Oakum refers to a fibrous material impregnated with tar
that was packed into the joints of wooden ships as a
water-proof plug. Early explorers felt the young penguins
looked like the young boys on the ship whose job was to
make oakum for the plugs and the nickname stuck.
