The second major fire within 14 months was smaller that last year's Zaca fire
but more dangerous. The "Gap" fire started July 1, 2008 and burned for 1 month
destroying 9500 acres of the nearby hills. Many homes were threatened and
their occupants evacuated but fire fighters managed to contain the blaze.
The fire was named after Windy Gap, the initial location incorrectly identified
as the fire's origin but later analysis showed the origin at Lizard's Mouth,
a popular hiking area. This fire cost $20 million to fight and was caused
by a 16-year old arsonist.
