The Coyote Melon Vine is Blooming

On the place

This is a native Desert plant Cucurbita palmata in the Gourd family . It's a vine with yellow squash like blooms that will set green melons with yellow strips about the size of a tennis ball !as they ripen & dry they turn a tan color and the seed's rattle inside . These melons are so bitter even the Coyotes won't eat them! so It's a mystery how they got the name Coyote Melon! When dry the kids liked to collect and paint them .
