Jim McGrath, Singer

NOTE: Jim emailed on August 10, 2010 to let me know that he has a new website, and CD. His website is www.JimMcGrathRI.com. One of my 1962 photographs of Jim is in the gallery on his website.

I recieved this new CD in late August, and a nice personal letter from Jim. His voice sounds like he was thirty, not in his early seventies.

One of the songs on the cd is about TIN CAN SAILORS, getting drunk, laid, and tattooed on Thames Street, the Blus Moon, and other happenings.

I re-found Jim on Google yesterday, July 10, 2007, and decided to share some of his early images made at the Newport, RI Hunt Club back in 1962.

Jim served in the navy at Newport, and stayed on as a folk singer when his enlistment ended.

Several navy buddies, and I, spent a lot of time listening to Jim sing in the spring, summer, and fall of 1962. Newport was hosting the America's Cup races in 62, and a lot of people were in town. A few found the Hunt Club located on the second floor of an old warehouse down on the waterfront.

During the weekdays the main dining room was open, but at night most of the Jim's fans were over in a smaller room with old banjos, and fish netting on the walls.

Jim came to some our dinners, and a going away party up at 82 Mill Street. (Berniece (Woody) Woods house, where we had rooms) I am still in touch with some of the guys, and I plan on letting them know about Jim's latest CD.
