Me in my room in Newport, RI (1962)

Newport, RI

This is a photo taken with a self timer not long before I got out of the navy in late September of 1962.

I rented a room from Berneice Woods at eighty two mill st, in Newport. I made contact with her about seven years ago and she in her ninties, and was still living in the 1700's house. She was the last living heir in the Newport Wood family.

By working evenings in a camera store I could afford to rent a room away from the base. The rent was $45.00 per month, with the bathroom being down the hall. Between being at the base, and working in the store I often walked down along the waterfront and photographed the sail and fishing boats there. I will be putting up more navy photos before long.

Hi a friend of mine was left this house by the Woods woman. She had no heirs. The house is slowly being restored.
I am glad I found your site. I have a collection of John Hopf photos. I have them hanging in my restaurant in Middletown.
Thanks
Billy
