This is an available light image made at NAAS Whiting Field, near Milton, FL., in 1960. I had one of the lower bunks on the left. Looks like some guy has dropped a sock in the floor, but for the most part the barracks were kept clean. The only downside to being stationed in FL was the heat. If it was 100 degrees, it was 100 degrees in the barracks by 4PM.
The lockers were much bigger than the ones in boot camp, or aboard the destroyers.
Whiting Field was training cadets in the old T-28's when I was there. The food was good, but there was little to do in Milton. The last year I was there, 1960-61 I worked evenings for the local newspaper, and got to meet some of the locals. The $1.00 per hour from the paper allowed me to have a car and eat out some. Gas was 25-30 cents per gallon, and a good restaurant meal, with Ice Box Lemon pie, was around $1.50.
