Sailors, Heading Home for the weekend, in 1959

Whiting Field, FL

I was walking just ahead of these guys, and I ask them to pose for this photo. I have forgotten their names, but both of them lived in my barracks. (We had just come through the main gate at NAAS Whiting Field, near Milton, FL.

Sailors often hitch hiked home on weekends. If you could get Friday afternoons off it helped a lot. It took about 12 hours to hitch 400 to 500 miles, and some times when leaving Whiting Field, near Milton, FL. at 4pm, I would arrive in Maryville, TN. around daylight the next morning.

Then early on Sunday morning I would head back to FL. Just a few hours at home but it was worth it.

There were no interstate highways back then, so most of my rides were on US 29 to Atlanta. and then US 411 to Maryville, TN. One night around midnight some farmer set me out at his driveway, and there were no lights, and traffic was slow, with only about one car coming by every fifteen minutes. After four hours I finally got a ride. I never again got into a car that was going to be leaving the highway out in the country.
