Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, New Mexico

Salinas Pueblo Missions is a curious park in that it is a collection of three discontinuous units Gran Quivira, Quarai, and Abó, — each with distinct Spanish Missions, Native American Pueblos, and a variety of other historic buildings and ruins. The park started on November 1, 1909 with the preservation of the Gran Quivira unit. This first park, Gran Quivira National Monument, was joined in 1980 by the Abó and Quarai Units, which were transferred to the National Park Service from New Mexico State Monuments. The two new units were combined with Gran Quivira to create Salinas National Monument, which was renamed Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument in 1988.

1. Gran Quivira—Here you can see two churches, excavated Indian structures, and exhibits.
2. Quarai – This site features exhibits and the most complete Salinas church.
3. Abó—The site has sophisticated church architecture and a large unexcavated pueblo.

Gran Quivira, Quarai, and Abó Mission ruins are fantastic. The history of this area is amazing.
The work that went into hand building these structures is mind boggling.
The Gran Quivira site is huge. It is the largest of the Salinas Pueblos. The Quarai and Abó Mission sites are very impressive as well.
When I think of all the work that these people did by hand I am in awe.
