The 1976 Tangshan earthquake was one of the most destructive in recent history. It occurred in an area of China that was not identified as a fault zone, and as consequence the buildings were inadequate to withstand the shaking. A memorial to the more than 255,000 victims was recently opened with all the names of the victims listed.
