As I traveled throughout China and took several pictures of people about this age, I found myself wondering what I could learn from them about the changes in China that they had seen in their lifetimes. I wonder, for example, what this man's life was like during the years of Maoism, and especially during the Cultural Revolution.

I, too, thought of the interesting things we could learn from these people and regretted that I couldn't communicate with them. This is why I took so many portraits, hopefully to tell a story through their faces that I couldn't tell through their words.
