Remembering
Manzanar National Monument, California February 2007

I was influenced by my friend Phil Douglis' image of a stone at the memorial tower. (http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/6923172 http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/69231725 )There was a somberness in his image that expressed some of what I felt at Manzanar. My image is different but I think I have gotten to the way the stones placed on the monuments make me feel.

Your stone is not only a symbol of courage, but a symbol of strength....the strength exhibited by a people removed involuntarily from their homes, relocated to this remote internment camp who made the best out of the restricted, cramped conditions under which they lived and endured the harshest of climates.

Another powerful but poignant image. The sun warms the top of it as it sits, remembering all who were there as the monument is dark in shadow.

Thank you, Tim, for drawing on my image for inspiration. We share the spirit yet differ in content. My stone is small, but carries large memories. Your stone is large, warmed by the sun, a symbol of the indomitable courage displayed by those that suffered and died here. In both cases, our images are about remembrance, honor, and love.
