Part of what struck me was the way that the internees made a life in the camps. The conditions were bleak, but they did what they could to beautify them. These stones edge a water way that was a part of a garden outside the hospital. I have been reading a lot about Chiura Obata, the japanese-america artist. He was relocated to Topaz in Utah. But he quickly started an art school at the camp. There is a wonderful book about his experience with the relocation called "Topaz Moon." |
