A GALLERY :: Sunset Studies ::

As I left a workshop near San Francisco Bay, the sky and sunset drew me to the coastline. This is a selection of images from that glorious evening. This is an unusual gallery for me. My internal editor says, "How many sunsets do you need here?" But I decided to present these fifteen both because I thought they were beautiful (which might be enough of a reason in itself) and because I thought it might be interesting to show the many variations that can be found in one place, in one half hour, with one sunset. I hope you enjoy these images.

And why NOT fifteen sunsets? There are no two sunsets alike in this world, and no two viewers of a particular sunset perceive it in the same way. You show us fifteen variations on how you see the glorious colors of the sky at dusk. Beautiful collection, Tim!

It is not a subject itself that becomes a cliche -- it depends upon how we handle that subject as an image. You present these images as a cumulative collection of studies. The images reinforce each other, progressing in intensity as the sun and clouds move through the frames, as the frame itself changes, and as the environmental context is varied. We see here the sum of all its parts: the beauty of nature itself expressed within a single half hour.

Is there really such a thing as too many sunsets? If so, why do we always gravitate to those glorious colors and dramatic clouds? I think this gallery shows the dramatic variations that draw us to the setting sun and the brilliant sky it creates. No apologies needed......these images are great.

TIM I am so thankful you did not listen to your internal editor and held true to your convictions...you, indeed are 100% correct in all the beauty in one sunset....what a shame there would be had you not made each picture. I am so thankFULL and am glued to just this gallery of Sunset Studies.....you are a fascinating photographer.
