Nikkor 18-70DX vs Sigma 18-50 f2.8 DC

Lately, one of more frequent D70 owners' dilemma: should I by Nikon's own kit lens, or get Sigma's faster newcomer "digital" lens 18-50mm f 2.8. Here are some of my tests performed in paralel on both lenses.

Hi Dany, it happens that I own Nikkor and just borrowed Sigma for testing (as I do with most of the lenses presented here). If I would have to choose one of them for keeping permanently, it would be Sigma, but just by a margin. It has slight edge in sharpness and speed (available light), but on the other hand it lacks that 50-70mm part of the zoom range which is (you can believe me, I used both in real life shooting) needed more that you can assume. Besides, Sigma is more expensive (double the price of Nikkor 18-70 here), but certainly not two times better :)

all the pic series (by lens) are shot in short sequence with just 5 second time difference. When that particular sequence was shot, the owner was arranging the veggies on the same spot. Watch closely different fruit/vegetables for changed positions.

The top row in both cases is the better image by far. It is clearly more contrasty, has better color rendition, and is sharper (by a lot). Question however, how did you manage to capture exactly the same motion blurred hand in your f5.6, f11, and f16 shots in the bottom row of the 18mm shot?
