Sigma 17-70 vs Nikkor 35-70

In previous test https://pbase.com/miljenko/1850vs1770 Sigma 17-70 was compared to Sigma 18-50 f2.8. Comparison was not completely adequate as 18-50 doesn't extend it's focal range enough to be compared. Besides, it's performance at 35 and 50 mm was not up to 17-70 results. In order to evaluate 17-70 properly, I have performed additional test, comparing it to Nikkor 35-70 f2.8 AF-D. Shooting subject was the same as in 17-70 vs 18-50 comparison, settings were the same, except for the cloudy weather. 100% crops were done at the pic center and at the left pic edge.

Pozdrav, Djorde! Every new owner's positive experience following my reviews is a great relief for me :) You can imagine how frustrating it could be if it ends differently. Of course, due to sample differences you could get a lemon and in case of 17-70 it acualy happened to few folks. Hum, you're asking me to help picking between 10-20 and 70-300. Well, both are great lenses worth every penny. But for trips like that, I'm strongly recommending WA lens like 10-20. It will be more useful than 70-300.

I want to thank you for tests zou made. Beacuse of these tests, I purchased Sigma 17-70 with Nikon D50, and I am very satdisfied. Lens is great. In August i plan a trip to Nice in France, so I wonder should I buy Sigma 70-300 APO, or invest in Sigma 10-20. I know these are two different lens, but what do you think, which lens would be more in use. Of course Sigma 17-70 goes with me.

Hi Bedo, focusing is a tad slower on D200, but not by much. However, it is much louder thou. Distortion is acceptable, sorry I didn't compare it direectly to the kit lens. Overal IQ is sensibly higher than with 18-70. Not that much to call for a switch, but if buying camera with no glass, this is the most sensible solution at this moment. Regards, M.

Impressive! How would you rate Sigma 17-70 compared with the Nikon 18-70DX based on the focus speed, distortion and photo quality?

Jim, speed is as good as your camera's internal focusing motor is since Sigma 17-70 has no built-in focusing motor. On D200 it's not stellar, but pretty decent though. Accuracy is spot-on. I've never experienced missfocusing or any trace of front/backfocusing.

Very impressive!! Except for '35mm center' the Sigma is better in any circumstances.
