Bodey was unable to profit from his discovery b/c he froze to death during a blizzard in November 1859 . . . .

There are several explanations for the discrepancy in the spelling of the town's name vs. the discoverer's.
My favorite involves a mistake made by a sign painter on an expensive sign commissioned for a stable,
prompting the city fathers to say, "What the hell. . . ." rather than springing for a re-do on the sign.

Thanks for answering my question about the spelling! :) There is a lake here with a mispelled name and now no one even knows about it. Years ago I met an old gentleman named Settle whose pioneer family had it named after them. A mistake was made on the state map and it is now named Suttle Lake.

There has to be some sort of story about why it's spelled differently.
