Mr. Hewes, a land developer, had the Last Spike made, out of gold and engraved.
It was not known for many years that he had a second spike made at the same time as a keepsake, and also out of gold.
It is now known as the "Lost" spike. His family kept it for over 100 years.
It was acquired by the California State Railroad Museum in 2005.
