Stanhopea Nigroviolacea 2.

Stanhopea orchids are unusual in that the flower spike grows downwards, not up as they usually do.
You have to grow them in a hanging basket, or mounted, so that the flower spike can appear.
Apparently, when the first specimens were discovered and taken back to Kew Gardens they were put into terracotta pots, so they never flowered.
Then one day somebody dropped a pot, breaking it and revealing the flower spikes trapped inside the pot !
Despite their exotic appearance they are quite easy to grow.
