There's a road along the river that runs through the refuge that eventually comes out near some agricultural fields. I noticed a dragonfly sticking pretty tight on a stick as I was driving through, so eventually I turned around and came back and found some different dragonflys in that spot. They would repeatedly fly off and return to land on just a couple of different sticks. I started out shooting from the truck, then went out and got on the tripod, and added the flash and an extension tube. This was nearly 2 PM, so very hard light and lots of shadows, but the flash really helped that out. So the lesson is, flash is not just for night time shooting.
These dragonflys are Variegated Meadowhawks.
