View looking south from Lone Pine area

The peninsula has higher ground in patches near the center, and the high ground was the immediate goal of the Allied landings. The ANZACs got near the top but were driven off (Turkish counterattack commanded by Mustafa Kemal). The landings at Cape Helles also stalled out. The two landing areas never linked up, although they were not that far apart, and neither got more than about 2 to 3 km off the beach. The peninsula is not very wide even at its widest point; http://gallipoli.tk/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Gallipoli-map-gif.gif) if my map does not suffice.
