Burial at Structure 17, he was named Fred by Nohmul student excavators

Nohmul

Here lies the remains of a [high ranking] adult male, buried below the floor at the entrance to this structure.
Perhaps the structure was built after his death as a tribute to his importance to the community.

The burial was excavated & named by 1985 crew members Alec Nicelescu and Peter Centorcelli.
Since the burial was discovered at the end of the 1985 season, it was covered for further investigation to be completed the following year.

In 1986, conservator Jim Spriggs was assisted by Zygmunt Bieniulis [His son Conrad referred to him as "Zyggy"] in subsequent excavation. They found a second burial below the uppermost skeleton. The lower skeletal remains were buried with burial goods that suggest social elevation.
Both burials believed to have been ceremoniously placed in the same episode.

I personally got as far as Texas in 1986 and had to return home for that field season. Unfortunately, the field crew had to endure a severe drought. I regret not getting to work with Conrad's Dad Zyggy...

Zygmunt A Bieniulis, 1925-2008.

This image was snapped with my Leica MP-4 [Canada Mfg.] onto Agfachrome slide film that had its chroma spoiled by the intense jungle heat and humidity that resided inside the camp "caha" [lock box]

21st Century processing removed the pink hue left 30 years ago and revealed a legitimate excavation image [sans a photographic reference scale]... sorry Norman
