The ruins of Aké located within the town of Acanceh and can be seen from the town's square.
One of the urban areas of northern Yucatan that supported a large population through the time of contact with the Spaniards. In fact, this area was the setting for an epic battle between the Maya and the Spanish Conquistadores.
Acanceh is an extraordinary little town in which over 2,000 years of time are expressed, from its ancient Mayan edifices to a fine 18th-century Spanish church.
INCIDENTS OF TRAVEL IN YUCATAN-
Shrewsbury, New Jersey native and legendary traveler, JOHN LLOYD STEVENS wrote of his 1841 trip through Aké..The huge columned hall was "a new and extraordinary feature entirely different from any we had seen, and at the very end of our journey, when we supposed ourselves familiar with the character of American ruins, it threw over them a new air of mystery."

It's amazing how readable and ultimately important Stephens' writings have remained to archaeologists and Maya enthusiasts alike. Norman Hammond wrote of Stephens importance..."a dedicated, well-read, and resourceful scholar, directing the first planned archaeological reconnaissance in the Maya area."
