I made a quick, and fairly brutal trip to the valley in mid-January. I drove straight down and straight back, driving down after working all night. But, I got 6 full days of birding between Laguna Atascosa and Falcon Dam, with the TX part of the trip producing 185 species plus a couple that aren't countable.
Highlights were Hook-billed Kite, Cassin's Vireo, and Muscovy (finally) for life or ABA birds. Also, spending some quality time with a Ferruginous Pgmy-Owl was worth the trip. Other goodies were Blue Bunting, Rose-throated Becard, Tropical Parula, Clay-colored Robin, Zone-tailed Hawk, etc.
Only big miss was Masked Duck, though I also spent an afternoon looking for Aplomado Falcon with no luck.
The photos in this gallery are in chronological order, with many species depicted more than once. These are sized for higher resolutions, and will look best at something like 1280 x 1024 monitor resolutions.
