We looked for a couple of reported male King Eiders on our trip, but this female off of Hampton, NH was our only one of the trip. She gave great views, with 3 female Common Eiders and some Black Ducks, not 100 yards from us. The light was rough for photography though.
The 'smiling' gape was obvious through our scopes, but not visible here. But, the short, rounded lobe against the dark bill is obvious, and she has a totally different head shepe to Common. She was also a paler brown than the almost rufous Commons.
