Black-capped Petrel

Gulf Stream pelagic off Hatteras; NC

Our 1st day out was a day of rough seas and high winds; perfect flying weather for Pterodroma's! We saw more Black-caps than either of the other 2 days, and set a new record for Trindade (Herald) Petrels of 6.

Even from a long way off, the white uppertail and collar are striking. These birds were really arcing well in this weather, putting on quite a show. This bird was coming back towards the water after a nice arc.
