Streak-backed Antshrike

Sierra de Lema

Antbirds are where I really failed to do any good, photography wise. I think everyone else fared at least a little better than I did. In this strongly backlit shot, the diagnostic white nape markings can be seen.

Sreak-backed is another Venezuela tepui endemic, and we had a pair that put on a great show.

For the trip we had a total of 40 species of Typical Antbirds, and Antpittas. Of these 39, 8 were heard-only birds. For the most part though, we all got great looks at most of the others. Here is the list:

Fasciated Antshrike
Great Antshrike (heard only)
Black-crested Antshrike
Barred Antshrike
Mouse-colored Antshrike
Streak-backed Antshrike (Venezuelan tepui endemic)
Plain Antvireo (heard only)
Dusky-throated Antshrike
Cinerous Antshrike
Pygmy Antwren (not by everyone)
Guianan Streaked-Antwren
Rufous-bellied Antwren
Brown-bellied Antwren
White-flanked Antwren
Slaty Antwren
Long-winged Antwren
Plain-winged Antwren
Gray Antwren
Spot-tailed Antwren
Todd's Antwren
Roraiman Antwren (pan-tepui endemic)
Northern White-fringed Antwren
Ash-winged Antwren
Gray Antbird
Dusky Antbird (heard only)
Jet Antbird
Warbling Antbird
Black-chinned Antbird
Silvered Antbird (heard only)
Ferruginous-backed Antbird
Black-throated Antbird
White-plumed Antbird (heard only, we couldn't find the army ant swarm)
Rufous-throated Antbird
Rufous-capped Antthrush (heard only)
Black-faced Antthrush
Scaled Antpitta
Spotted Antpitta (heard only)
Thrush-like Antpitta (heard only)
