This immature male Broad-tail is coming to the feeders of Dan Williams, on Signal Moutain, just outside of Chattanooga, TN. This is only TN's second record of this western species.
I had practically no light the 1.5 hours we were there enjoying the bird, so all of my shots had to go through the Photoshop ringer to even be able to see the bird in the dark originals.
This bird has a few of the distinctive, and stunning, pinkish-rose gorget feathers, but I never captured this in an image. In this shot, several things point to Broad-tailed: (the buffy flanks narrow it down to 4 species) the long tail eliminates Calliope, and the lack of any orange-rufous on the back, uppertail coverts, or face is a good mark against Rufous/Allen's. Of course, it's still nice to see that rose-colored spot on the throat to leave no doubt.
